Tahukah kamu apa itu comparative dan superlative? Ya, Comparative dan Superlative adalah bentuk perbandingan dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk membandingkan sifat (adjectives) atau keterangan (adverbs).

Comparative Degree

Comparative Degree (Perbandingan Lebih) diperlukan untuk membandingkan dua hal (orang, benda, atau situasi). Aturan pembentukan Comparative yaitu: 

a) Adjectives/Adverbs 1 Suku Kata (Short Words)

Tambahkan -er + than. Contoh:  

Tall → Taller than  

Fast → Faster than  

Contoh kalimat comparative degree yaitu:  

Rina is taller than Dina.  

This car is faster than that one.  

b) Adjectives/Adverbs 2 Suku Kata Berakhiran -y, -er, -ow, -le  

Ubah -y menjadi -i + -er. Contoh:  

Happy → Happier than  

Clever → Cleverer than  

Contoh kalimat comparative degree yaitu:

She is happier than her sister.  

This puzzle is simpler than the last one.  

c) Adjectives/Adverbs 2+ Suku Kata (Long Words)  

Gunakan more + adjective/adverb + than. Contoh:  

Beautiful → More beautiful than  

Slowly → More slowly than  

Contoh kalimat comparative degree yaitu:  

This dress is more expensive than that one.  

He speaks more clearly than his brother.  

d) Irregular Forms (Bentuk Tidak Beraturan)

Contoh kalimat comparative degree yaitu:  

Her English is better than mine.  

This situation is worse than before.  

Superlative Degree

Superlative Degree (Perbandingan Paling) digunakan untuk membandingkan tiga atau lebih hal (menunjukkan yang paling).  Adapan aturan Pembentukan Superlative yaitu: 

a) Adjectives/Adverbs 1 Suku Kata  

Tambahkan -est dan gunakan the sebelum adjective. Contoh:  

Tall → The tallest  

Fast → The fastest  

Contoh kalimat superlative degree yaitu:  

He is the tallest in the class.  

This is the fastest car in the world.  

b) Adjectives/Adverbs 2 Suku Kata Berakhiran -y, -er, -ow, -le  

Ubah -y menjadi -i + -est. Contoh:  

Happy → The happiest  

Clever → The cleverest  

Contoh kalimat superlative degree yaitu:  

She is the happiest person I know.  

This is the simplest method.  

c) Adjectives/Adverbs 2+ Suku Kata  

Gunakan the most + adjective/adverb. Contoh:  

Beautiful → The most beautiful  

Slowly → The most slowly  

Contoh kalimat superlative degree yaitu:  

This is the most expensive phone.  

He works the most efficiently in the team.  

d) Irregular Forms (Bentuk Tidak Beraturan)  

Adjective/Adverb	Superlative Form
Good/Well	The best
Bad/Badly	The worst
Far	The farthest/furthest
Little	The least
Much/Many	The most

Contoh kalimat superlative degree yaitu:  

She is the best student in school.  

This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen.  

Perbedaan Comparative vs. Superlative  

Ada beberapa perbedaan comparative dan superlative yang mendasar diantaranya:

Comparative	Superlative
Membandingkan 2 hal	Membandingkan 3+ hal
Menggunakan -er/more + than	Menggunakan -est/the most
Contoh: "This book is more interesting than that one."	Contoh: "This is the most interesting book."

Kesalahan Umum dalam Comparative & Superlative  

Berikut ini beberapa kesalahan umum dalam kalimat comparative dan superlative. 

❌ Salah: She is more taller than her sister.  

✅ Benar: She is taller than her sister. (Tidak perlu "more" untuk kata 1 suku kata)  

❌ Salah: This is the most fastest car.  

✅ Benar: This is the fastest car. (Hindari double superlative)
