Ya, Subject-verb agreement adalah aturan tata bahasa yang mengharuskan kata kerja (verb) dalam sebuah kalimat sesuai dengan subjek (subject) dalam hal jumlah (singular/plural) dan orang (first, second, third).  Hal ini berarti bahwa jika subjek tunggal (singular), maka kata kerjanya harus singular. Sementara itu, jika subjek jamak (plural), maka kata kerjanya harus plural.  

Aturan Dasar Subject-Verb Agreement

Ada beberapa aturan dasar Subject-Verb Agreement dalam Bahasa Inggris di antaranya yaitu:

a) Subjek Tunggal (Singular) → Verb + -s/-es  

He/She/It dan subjek singular lainnya membutuhkan kata kerja dengan akhiran -s/-es (pada Simple Present Tense). Contoh:  

She works in a bank.  

The cat sleeps on the sofa.  

A student studies hard.  

b) Subjek Jamak (Plural) → Verb Tanpa -s/-es  

I/You/We/They dan subjek plural menggunakan kata kerja tanpa -s/-es. Contoh:  

They work in a bank.  

The cats sleep on the sofa.  

Students study hard.  

Aturan Khusus Subject-Verb Agreement

Selain itu, ada beberapa aturan khusus Subject-Verb Agreement dalam Bahasa Inggris di antaranya yaitu:

a) Subjek dengan "And" (Compound Subject)  

Jika dua subjek dihubungkan dengan "and", biasanya verb-nya plural. Contoh:  

Tom and Jerry are friends.  

Bread and butter are my favorite snacks.  

Pengecualian: Jika dua subjek merujuk pada satu hal yang sama, gunakan verb singular. Contoh:  

Fish and chips is a popular dish in the UK.  

b) Subjek dengan "Or", "Nor", "Either...or", "Neither...nor"  

Verb mengikuti subjek yang terdekat (Proximity Rule). Contoh:  

Neither the teacher nor the students are here. (students = plural → are)  

Either the cat or the dog has eaten the food. (dog = singular → has)  

c) Subjek Kolektif (Collective Nouns)  

Kata seperti team, family, class, government bisa singular atau plural tergantung konteks.  

Jika dianggap sebagai satu kesatuan → verb singular. Contoh: The team is playing well. (Tim sebagai satu grup.)  

Jika merujuk pada anggota individu → verb plural. Contoh: The team are arguing among themselves. (Anggota tim saling berdebat.)  

d) Subjek yang Selalu Singular  

Kata-kata berikut selalu singular, meski berakhiran -s, seperti news, mathematics, physics, economics, dan sebagainya, serta apabila subjek kalimat berupa kata: everyone, somebody, nobody, each, either, neither. Contoh:  

The news is shocking.  

Everyone has a dream.  

Neither of them knows the answer.  

e) Subjek yang Selalu Plural  

Kata-kata berikut selalu plural, seperti scissors, pants, glasses, trousers, people, police, cattle, dan sebagainya. Contoh:  

My glasses are broken.  

The police are investigating the case.  

f) Subjek dengan "There is/There are"  

"There is" untuk singular.  

"There are" untuk plural.  

Contoh:  

There is a book on the table.  

There are many books on the table.  

Kesalahan Umum dalam Subject-Verb Agreement  

Ada beberapa kesalahan yang lazim ditemukan dalam Subject-Verb Agreement yaitu:

❌ "She don’t like apples."  

✅ "She doesn’t like apples." (She = singular → doesn’t)  

❌ "The list of items are long."  

✅ "The list of items is long." (Subjek utama = "list" → singular)  

❌ "Either John or his friends is coming."  

✅ "Either John or his friends are coming." (Subjek terdekat = "friends" → plural)

Singular subject → singular verb (He runs).  

Plural subject → plural verb (They run).  

Perhatikan subjek yang kompleks (seperti "either...or", collective nouns, dll).  

Hindari kesalahan umum seperti "she don’t" atau "there is many books".
