Tahukah kamu apa itu conditional sentence? Conditional Sentence, disebut juga “Kalimat Pengandaian” adalah struktur kalimat yang menyatakan "jika... maka..." untuk mengungkapkan situasi nyata atau hipotetis. Conditionals ini seringkali ditemukan dalam english grammar test atau written-expression test pada tes TOEFL. Conditionals sendiri ditandai dengan penggunaan conjunction (kata hubung) yaitu “If”, yang artinya “jika, andai, atau apabila”. Oleh karena itu, conditionals sentence ini disebut juga dengan “If Clause Sentence” yaitu kalimat yang disertai dengan klausa pengandaian. 

Dalam bahasa Inggris, Conditionals dibedakan menjadi 4 tipe utama. Tipe-tipe Conditionals tersebut mempunyai rumus dan penggunaan yang berbeda. Mari simak penjelasan conditionals atau if clause selengkapnya berikut ini. 

1. Conditional Type 0 (Fakta Umum)  

Conditional Type 0 ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kebenaran ilmiah atau fakta yang selalu benar. Rumus Conditional Type 0 yaitu:  

If + Simple Present, Simple Present  

Contoh:  

- If you heat ice, it melts. (Jika kamu memanaskan es, ia mencair)  

- If people don’t eat, they get hungry.  (Jika orang tidak makan, mereka lapar)

 2. Conditional Type 1 (Kemungkinan di Masa Depan)  

Conditional Type 1 ini digunakan untuk menyatakan situasi realistis yang mungkin terjadi.  

Rumus Conditional Type 1 yaitu:  

If + Simple Present, Simple Future (will + Verb 1)  

Contoh:  

- If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic.  (Jika besok hujan, kita akan membatalkan pikniknya)

- If you study hard, you will pass the exam. (Jika kamu belajar sungguh-sungguh, kamu akan lulus ujian itu)

3. Conditional Type 2 (Tidak Nyata Sekarang)  

Conditional Type 2 ini digunakan untuk menyatakan situasi imajiner/tidak realistis di masa sekarang.  

Rumus Conditional Type 2 yaitu:  

If + Simple Past, Simple Past Future (would + Verb 1)

Contoh:  

- If I were rich, I would travel the world. (Jika saya kaya, saya akan berkeliling dunia. FAKTA: Saya tidak kaya)  

- If he had time, he would help you. (Jika dia punya waktu, saya akan membantumu. FAKTA:  Dia tidak punya waktu)  

Catatan:  

- "If I were" lebih formal daripada "If I was". Seringkali, subjek “He, She, It, atau singular subject” juga menggunakan to be “were”.  

4. Conditional Type 3 (Penyesalan Masa Lalu)  

Conditional Type 3 ini digunakan untuk menyatakan situasi yang sudah berlalu dan tidak bisa diubah.  

Rumus Conditional Type 3 yaitu:  

If + Past Perfect, Past Perfect Future (would have + Verb-3) 

Contoh:  

- If you had studied, you would have passed. (Jika kamu sudah belajar, kamu akan sudah lulus. FAKTA: Kamu tidak belajar)  

- If she had taken the job, she would have been rich now.  

Perbandingan Singkat Tipe-tipe If-Clause

• Type 0: If you mix red and blue, you get purple. (Fakta ilmiah)  
• Type 1: If it rains, I will stay home. (Kemungkinan nyata)  
• Type 2: If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. (Khayalan sekarang)  
• Type 3: If I had known, I would have helped. (Penyesalan masa lalu) 

*Catatan Tambahan:

Ada beberapa bentuk lain dalam penggunaan If-Clause dalam Conditional Sentence yaitu sebagai berikut. 

1. "Unless" = "If not"  

   - Unless you hurry, you’ll be late. = If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late.  

2. Inversion (Formal) → Hilangkan "if" dan balik subjek-verb:  

   - Were I rich, I would... (Pengganti If I were rich...)  

3. Mixed Conditional (Gabungan Type 2 + 3):  

   - If I had studied harder (Type 3), I would be smarter now (Type 2).
