“MODIFIER: NOUN AS AN ADJECTIVE“

 

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu modifier? Ya, modifier merupakan sebuah kata atau sekumpulan kata yang memodifikasi kata lainnya dalam sebuah kalimat. Modifiers dalam bahasa Inggris dapat berupa adverb (kata keterangan), adjective (kata sifat), conjunction (kata hubung), article (kata sandang), dan sebagainya.

 

Apa itu Adjective?

Adjective, disebut juga adjektiva atau kata sifat merupakan kata yang berfungsi untuk mensifati atau menerangkan kualitas atau karakteristik suatu benda (noun) atau kata ganti (pronoun), seperti bentuk, ukuran, ciri-ciri, dan sebagainya. Dalam bahasa Inggris, adjective seringkali berada tepat sebelum noun dan membentuk noun phrase (frasa nomina. Contohnya: an interesting story, the luxurious car, the difficult situation, dan sebagainya. Selain itu, adjective pada umumnya dapat dibedakan menjadi beberapa macam yaitu Opinion (Pendapat), Size (Ukuran), Age (Masa Atau Umur), Shape (Bentuk), Color (Warna), Origin (Asal Tempat), Material (Bahan), dan Purpose (Tujuan). Kata-kata tersebut disingkat menjadi “OSAShCOMP”.

Apa itu Noun?

Noun, disebut juga nomina atau kata sifat merupakan kata yang merujuk pada penamaan atau wujud orang, benda, hewan, tempat, dan konsep abstrak, seperti ide, gagasan, dan sebagainya. Noun dapat berkedudukan sebagai “subjek” ataupun “objek” dalam sebuah kalimat. Selain itu, Noun atau kata benda sering kali didahului dengan article (a/an, the), numbers (two, second, twenty), adjective (new, bright, fantastic), possessive pronoun (my, your, his), quantifier (some, many several, a lot of, plenty of) membentuk frasa yang disebut noun phrase (frasa nomina). Contoh: a student, beautiful handbag, two cars, dan lain-lain. Kemudian, noun phrase juga dapat terbentuk dari gabungan antara noun dan noun lainnya.

Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas terkait noun yang berfungsi sebagai adjective.  Yuk, simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

 

Noun as An Adjective

Noun dapat berkedudukan sebagai adjective (kata sifat) apabila terdapat dua noun (kata benda) yang saling melengkapi. Kedua noun tersebut membentuk noun phrase yaitu frasa nomina. Contohnya yaitu “You are all language students.” Pada contoh tersebut kata “language” dan “students” merupakan noun yang membentuk noun phrase. Namun, kata noun yang pertama berfungsi atau berkedudukan sebagai adjective (kata sifat).

Ada beberapa ketentuan terkait noun sebagai adjective pada noun phrase di antaranya yaitu:

a) ketika noun berkedudukan sebagai adjective (kata sifat), maka kata tersebut tidak memiliki bentuk plural (jamak) atau possessive (kepemilikan). Plural noun (kata benda jamak) bisanya ditandai dengan adanya akhiran -s/-es pada akhir kata noun tersebut—disebut regular plural noun, seperti languages, histories, dan lain-lain. Namun, ada beberapa bentuk plural noun yang berbeda atau sama dari kata asalnya yaitu terbentuk dengan perubahan huruf vocal ataupun bentuk kata itu sendiri—disebut irregular plural noun, misalnya man-men, child-children, fish-fish, dan lain-lain. Sedangkan possessive noun (kata benda kepemilikan) ini ditandai dengan adanya “`s” diakhir noun itu sendiri, misalnya term`s, television`s, football`s, dan lain-lain.

b. pengecualian: beberapa noun berikut ini selalu berakhiran -s tetapi merupakan bentuk singular, ketika noun tersebut digunakan atau merujuk pada nama bidang keilmuan atau ilmu pengetahuan, seperti physics, mathematics, economics. Contohnya yaitu “He is an economics teacher.” Namun, dalam contoh berikut ini, “The current economic situation is extremely uncertain.” Kata economic merupakan adjective bukan noun.

 

Error Examples

Perhatikan beberapa contoh noun sebagai adjective yang salah pada kalimat berikut ini dan pembenarannya!
