Pernahkah kalian mendengar reported speech? Ya, Reported speech ini disebut juga dengan “indirect speech”. Reported speech dalam Bahasa Indonesia disebut dengan kalimat tidak langsung. Jika kalimat langsung ditandai dengan penggunaan tanda baca petik dua (“ … “), maka reported speech tidak diikuti dengan tanda baca tersebut.

Reported Speech (Indirect Speech) dalam bahasa Inggris adalah cara melaporkan atau mengulang perkataan orang lain tanpa menggunakan kutipan langsung. Dalam reported speech, kita mengubah struktur kalimat aslinya (direct speech) agar sesuai dengan konteks pelaporan.

Perubahan dalam Reported Speech

Adapun perubahan pada Reported Speech dalam Bahasa Inggris mencangkup:

a) Perubahan Tense  

Biasanya, tense dalam reported speech "mundur" satu tingkat dari direct speech. Contoh:  

Direct Speech: "I am happy." (Present Simple)  (Saya bahagia)

Reported Speech: She said she was happy. (Past Simple)  (Dia mengatakan dia bahagia)

Berikut tabel perubahan tense pada reported speech.

b) Perubahan Kata Ganti (Pronouns) 

Dalam perubahan direct speech ke reported speech, kata ganti disesuaikan dengan subjek pelapor. Contoh:  

Direct: "I like ice cream."  (Saya suka es krim)

Reported: He said he liked ice cream.  (Dia mengatakan dia suka es krim)

3) Perubahan Keterangan Waktu/Tempat

Ada perubahan adverb of time/place (keterangan waktu/tempat) ketika direct speech menjadi reported speech. Contoh:  

Direct Speech	Reported Speech
now	then
today	that day
here	there
tomorrow	the next day

Struktur Umum Reported Speech

Sementara itu, struktur dasar pada Reported Speech yaitu:

Reporting Verb yaitu Kata kerja pelapor seperti said, told, asked, explained, dll.  

That (opsional) merupakan kata hubung yang bisa digunakan atau dihilangkan.  

Contoh:  

She said (that) she was tired.  (Dia mengatakan (bahwa) dia lelah)

Jenis Kalimat dalam Reported Speech

Reported Speech memiliki beberapa ragam kalimat di antaranya yaitu:

1. Pernyataan (Statements) 

Direct: "I will help you."  (Saya akan membantu kamu)

Reported: He said he would help me.  (Dia mengatakan dia akan membantuku)

2. Pertanyaan (Questions)

a) Yes/No Questions: Gunakan if/whether.  

Contoh:  

Direct: "Are you busy?"  (Apakah kamu sibuk?)

Reported: She asked if/whether I was busy. (Dia bertanya apakah saya sibuk) 

b) Wh- Questions: Pertanyaan menggunakan kata tanya (what, where, etc.).  

Contoh:  

Direct: "Where do you live?" (Dimana kamu tinggal)  

Reported: He asked where I lived.  (Dia bertanya dimana saya tinggal)

Direct: "What time is it?"  (Jam berapa?)

Reported: He asked what time it was.  (Dia bertanya jam berapa)

3. Perintah (Commands/Requests)

Gunakan to + infinitive atau not to + infinitive.  

Contoh:  

Direct: "Close the door!"  

Reported: She told me to close the door.  

Direct: "Don't be late."  

Reported: He warned me not to be late.  

Catatan Penting:

1. Jika reporting verb dalam bentuk present tense (e.g., says, asks), tense tidak berubah. Contoh:  

Direct: "I am hungry."  

Reported: She says she is hungry.  

2. Jika kalimat langsung adalah kebenaran umum/fakta, tense bisa tetap. Contoh:  

Direct: "The sun rises in the east."  

Reported: He said the sun rises in the east.  

3. Told vs. Said

Told harus diikuti objek (e.g., told me, told him).  

Said tidak perlu objek.

Pembahasan: Direct speech pada kalimat di atas dalam pola “Present Perfect Tense” (have submitted), maka ketika diubah menjadi reported speech kalimatnya berubah menjadi “Past Perfect Tense” (had submitted). 

3. He said, "The meeting starts at 3 PM."  

He said that the meeting _____ at 3 PM.

Pembahasan: Direct speech pada kalimat di atas dalam pola “Simple Present Tense” (starts), maka ketika diubah menjadi reported speech kalimatnya berubah menjadi “Simple Past Tense” (started). 

4. She asked, "Where is the conference room?"  

She asked where the conference room _____.

Pembahasan: Direct speech pada kalimat di atas dalam pola “Simple Present Tense” (is), maka ketika diubah menjadi reported speech kalimatnya berubah menjadi “Simple Past Tense” (was).

Pembahasan: Direct speech berubah menjadi indirect speech dengan perubahan tense dari present menjadi past (needed).
