Tahukah kamu apa itu phrasal modal? Ya, phrasal modal merupakan ungkapan atau frasa yang tetapi terdiri dari dua kata atau lebih dan mempunyai fungsi mirip dengan modal auxiliary verb. Phrasal modal ini seringkali digunakan untuk menyatakan kemungkinan, keharusan, rencana, atau kewajiban dengan cara yang lebih fleksibel dan sering kali terdengar lebih sopan atau tidak terlalu langsung dibanding modal tunggal. Adapun contoh phrasal modal yaitu be able to, be going to, have to, have got to, be supposed to, dan be allowed to. Selain itu, phrasal modal ini biasanya diikuti oleh kata kerja dasar (bare infinitive) dan sering digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari maupun tulisan formal.

Sementara itu, phrasal modal mempunyai fungsi yang hampir sama dengan modal biasa, tetapi penggunaannya dapat menyesuaikan bentuk kata kerja sesuai dengan waktu (tenses) dan subjek. Misalnya, have to (present tense) bisa menjadi had to untuk bentuk lampau (past tense. Misalnya, I had to finish my homework last night. Sementara be going to digunakan untuk menyatakan rencana di masa depan (future tense). Misalnya, We are going to visit grandma tomorrow. Bentuk be able to digunakan untuk menunjukkan kemampuan. Misalnya, She is able to solve the problem quickly. Hal ini membuat phrasal modal lebih fleksibel karena bisa berubah bentuk sesuai kebutuhan kalimat.
