“PROBLEMS WITH PRONOUNS”

 

Pronoun (Kata Ganti) merupakan kata-kata, seperti he, she, atau it yang dapat menggantikan noun (kata benda). Ketika Anda menemui pronoun (kata ganti) pada written expression question pada tes TOEFL, Anda perlu memeriksa bahwa kata tersebut menempati fungsi yang sesuai pada kalimat (contohnya sebagai subjek, atau sebagai objek) dan kata tersebut sesuai dengan noun (kata benda) yang digantinya. Berikut ini beberapa permasalahan penggunaan pronoun (kata ganti) yang paling umum pada tes TOEFL: (1) distinguishing subject and object pronouns (membedakan kata ganti subjek dan objek), (2) distinguishing possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives (membedakan kata ganti dan kata sifat kepemilikan), and (3) checking pronoun reference for agreement (memeriksa kesesuaian referensi kata ganti).

Possessive Adjective (Kata Sifat Kepemilikan) dan Possessive Pronoun (Kata Ganti Kepemilikan) menunjukkan siapa dan apa yang memiliki suatu benda. Namun, Possessive Adjective dan Possessive Pronoun tidak memiliki fungsi yang sama, dan kedua jenis possessive ini dapat membingungkan pada tes TOEFL. Possessive adjective mendeskripsikan noun (kata benda): kata ini harus diikuti dengan noun. Possessive pronoun menggantikan noun (kata benda): kata ini tidak dapat diikuti dengan noun.

 

1. They lent me their book. (possessive adjective)

2. They lent me theirs. (possessive pronoun)

 

Perhatikan contoh kalimat ke-1, possessive adjective “their” diikuti dengan noun “book”. Pada contoh ke-2, possessive pronoun “theirs” tidak diikuti dengan noun.

Berikut ini beberapa contoh jenis kesalahan yang mungkin terjadi berkenaan dengan penggunaan possessive adjective dan pronoun pada tes TOEFL.

 

1. Each morning they read theirs* newspaper.

2. Could you give me your*?

 

Pada contoh kalimat ke-1, possessive pronoun “theirs” salah karena kata ini diikuti dengan noun ”newspaper”, dan possessive pronoun tidak dapat diikuti dengan noun. Possessive adjective “their” diperlukan pada contoh kalimat ke-1 ini. pada contoh ke-2, possessive adjective “your” salah karena kata ini tidak diikuti dengan noun, dan possessive adjective harus diikuti dengan noun. Possessive pronoun “yours” diperlukan pada contoh kalimat ke-2 ini.

Each of the following sentences contains at least one possessive pronoun or adjective. Underline the possessive in the sentences. Then indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I).

1.    If she borrows your coat, then you should be able to borrow her. (.....)

2.    Each pot and pan in her kitchen has its own place on the shelf. (.....)

3.    Mary and Mark invited theirs parents to see their new apartment. (.....)

4.    When my roommate paid her half of the rent, I paid mine. (.....)

5.    All the students need to bring theirs own pencils and answer sheets to the exam. (.....)

6.    All her secretaries are working late tonight to finish her report. (.....)

7.    The horse trotting around the track won its race a few minute ago. (.....)

8.    Before the repost is finalized, the information in their notes and our must be proofed. (.....)

9.    She worked all day cooking food and making decorations for her son’s birthday party. (.....)

10. The weather in the mountains this weekend will be extremely cold, so please take yours heavy jackets. (.....)

 

Key Answer

1.    If she borrows your coat, then you should be able to borrow her. (I) > kata “her” seharusnya diganti dengan possessive pronoun “hers”.
