“PROBLEMS WITH ARTICLES”

 

Hi, Sobat!

Article (kata sandang) sangat sulit untuk dipelajari karena ada banyak tata aturan, pengecualian, dan kasus-kasus tertentu dalam penggunaannya. Namun, mungkin untuk mempelajari beberapa tata aturan yang akan membantumu menggunakan article dalam bahasa Inggris dengan benar.

Noun (kata benda) dalam bahasa Inggris dapat berupa countable (terhitung) atau uncountable (tidak terhitung). Jika sebuah noun merupakan jenis countable, maka pasti dapat berbentuk singular (tunggal) atau plural (jamak). Selain jenis-jenis umum noun, terdapat dua jenis articles yaitu definite or specific (pasti/tertentu) dan indefinite or general (tidak pasti/umum). Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

Dengan singular countable noun, dapat digunakan baik definite atau indefinite article, tetapi mereka memiliki makna yang berbeda. Definite article (kata sandang pasti) digunakan untuk merujuk pada salah satu benda yang spesifik (khusus).

Tom will bring the book tomorrow.

(Ada sebuah buku tertentu yang akan Tom bawa besok)

He will arrive on the first Tuesday in July.

(Hanya pada Selasa 1 Juli dia akan tiba)

He sailed on the Pacific Ocean.

(Hanya ada satu Samudera Pasifik)

Indefinite article (kata sandang tidak pasti) digunakan ketika suatu benda yang dimaksud dapat saja merujuk pada salah satu dari beberapa benda yang berbeda.

Tom will bring a book tomorrow.

(Tom akan membawa sebuah buku)

He will arrive on a Tuesday in July.

(Dia akan tiba kapan saja di hari selasa bulan Juli)

He sailed on an ocean.

(Dia telah berlayar ke salah satu samudera dari beberapa samudera di dunia)

Berikut ini informasi penting yang harus Anda pahami terkait ide khusus dan umum yaitu:

 

SPECIFIC & GENERAL IDEAS
Article	Meaning	Uses
A, An	General Idea (Ide Umum)	Gunakan ketika terdapat banyak (benda), dan kamu tidak tahu yang mana (benda) yang dimaksud. Gunakan ketika terdapat banyak (benda), dan kamu tidak peduli yang mana (benda) yang dimaksud. Catatan: Indefinite article “a/an” biasanya digunakan sebagai determiner atau modifier yang melengkapi singular noun (kata benda tunggal), seperti a book, a car, etc. “a” juga digunakan dengan noun (kata benda) lainnya sebagi satu kesatuan modifier, seperti a number of, a piece of, a glass of, etc.
The	Specific Idea (Ide Khusus)	Gunakan ketika (benda) itu merupakan satu-satunya. Gunakan ketika terdapat banyak (benda), dan kamu tahu yang mana (benda) yang dimaksud. Catatan: Definite article “the” biasanya digunakan sebagai determiner atau modifier yang melengkapi noun (kata benda) yang merujuk pada nama, geografis, astronomis, identitas, dan sebagainya, seperti the Saring-La River, the Greek Emperor, etc. “the” juga digunakan Ordinal Number merupakan angka yang berfungsi untuk menunjukkan urutan/ tingkatan suatu benda, seperti the first, the second, etc. “the” digunakan dengan superlative adjective, seperti the best, the most beautiful, etc.

KEY ANSWER
