“MODIFIER: THE USE OF ADVERBS ONLY“

 

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu modifier? Ya, modifier merupakan sebuah kata atau sekumpulan kata yang memodifikasi kata lainnya dalam sebuah kalimat. Modifiers dalam bahasa Inggris dapat berupa adverb (kata keterangan), adjective (kata sifat), conjunction (kata hubung), article (kata sandang), dan sebagainya.

Apa itu Adverb?

Adverb, disebut kata keterangan, merupakan sebuah kata yang berfungsi untuk memberikan keterangan, baik berupa waktu (time), tempat (place), cara (manner), tingat keseringan (frequency), jumlah (quantity), dan sebagainya. Dalam bahasa Inggris, kita perlu memerhatikan penempatan adverb tersebut dalam sebuah kalimat tertulis ataupun lisan. Umumnya adverb dapat ditempatkan di depan, tengah ataupun belakang.

Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahasa penggunaan Adverb only dalam sebuah kalimat.  Yuk, simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

 

The Use of Adverb Only

Adverb (kata keterangan) dalam bahasa Inggris memiliki berbagai macam jenis dan fungsi dalam sebuah klausa ataupun kalimat. Dalam sebuah kalimat, adverb seringkali menerangkan adjective (kata sifat), verb (kata kerja), ataupun adverb (kata keterangan) lainnya. Adverb, seperti only sebaiknya ditempatkan bersandingan (dekat) dengan adjective (kata sifat), verb (kata kerja), ataupun adverb (kata keterangan) lainnya yang diterangkannya. Beberapa contoh adverb lainnya yaitu just, nearly, hardly, almost, dan scarcely. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

 

She has only three dollars. (Adverb + Adjective)

He only saw her; he did not speak to her. (Adverb + Verb)

Only downstairs can one find a real bargain. (Adverb + Adverb)

 

Error Example

Perhatikan beberapa contoh penggunaan adverb yang salah pada kalimat berikut ini dan pembenarannya!

 

Wrong Sentence	Right Sentence
We only have four hours to finish this paper.	We have only four hours to finish this paper.
She just wants to take one class.	She wants to take just one class.
That house nearly costs sixty thousand dollars.	That house costs nearly sixty thousand dollars.
She was so quiet that hardly he noticed her.	She was so quiet that he hardly noticed her.
They almost drove six hundred miles.	They drove almost six hundred miles.

 

Catatan:

Adverb sebaiknya ditempatkan bersandingan (dekat) dengan adjective (kata sifat), verb (kata kerja), ataupun adverb (kata keterangan) lainnya yang diterangkannya.
