“MODIFIER: ARTICLE“

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu modifier? Ya, modifier merupakan sebuah kata atau sekumpulan kata yang memodifikasi kata lainnya dalam sebuah kalimat. Modifiers dalam bahasa Inggris dapat berupa adverb (kata keterangan), adjective (kata sifat), conjunction (kata hubung), article (kata sandang), dan sebagainya.

Apa itu Articles?

Article, dalam bahasa Indonesia dikenal sebagai kata sandang. Article merupakan bagian dari adjective (kata sifat) yang berfungsi untuk menjelaskan sifat dari noun (kata benda). Article (kata sandang) ini berupa a, an, dan the. Meskipun sama-sama termasuk article, kata a, an, & the memiliki fungsi yang berbeda dalam sebuah frasa. Kemudian, article “the” termasuk Definite Article dan “a/ an” termasuk Indefinite Article. Selain itu, article umumnya diikuti dengan noun (kata benda) sehingga membentuk noun phrase (frasa nomina). Perhatikan struktur penulisan article berikut ini!

“Article + Noun”

atau

“Article + Adjective + Noun”

Contoh:

I just bought a book.

I just bought a new book.

She has a car.

She has a sport car.

Article

Terdapat beberapa aturan penggunaan article a/an dan the di antaranya yaitu sebagai berikut.

1. Gunakan article a atau an dengan unspecified singular count noun (kata benda tunggal yang dapat dihitung dan tidak spesifik). Gunakan article “an” sebelum sebuah kata yang diawali dengan huruf vocal atau huruf yang dibaca (bunyinya) vocal. Perhatikan beberapa contoh berikut ini.

I saw a puppy in the park yesterday.

The woman asked for an exact count.

He is an honest man.

2. Gunakan article the dengan specified singular and plural count nouns (kata benda tunggal dan jamak yang dapat dihitung dan spesifik). Perhatikan beberapa contoh berikut ini.

The puppy I saw in the park was black and white.

The engineers from Clearwater Company designed a new system for water purification.

3. Jangan gunakan sebuah artikel dengan plural count nouns (kata benda plural yang dapat dihitung) yang digunakan pada sebuah pemikiran umum (general sense). Perhatikan beberapa contoh berikut ini.

Dogs make good pets.

Astronauts go through rigorous training programs to prepare for space flights.

4. Jangan gunakan article dengan non-count nouns (kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung) yang digunakan pada sebuah pemikiran umum (general sense).

I do not like seafood.

Honesty is the best policy.

Error Examples

Perhatikan beberapa contoh penggunaan article yang salah pada kalimat berikut ini dan pembenarannya!
