“MODIFIER: THE USE OF DEMONTRATIVES“

 

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu modifier? Ya, modifier merupakan sebuah kata atau sekumpulan kata yang memodifikasi kata lainnya dalam sebuah kalimat. Modifiers dalam bahasa Inggris dapat berupa adverb (kata keterangan), adjective (kata sifat), conjunction (kata hubung), article (kata sandang), dan sebagainya.

 

Apa itu Demonstative?

Demonstrative, disebut juga kata demonstratif atau kata tunjuk, merupakan suatu kata yang berfungsi untuk menunjukkan atau menerangkan keberadaan suatu benda. Demonstrative ini seringkali dikategorikan sebagai determiner atau adjective. Hal ini dikarenakan kata terebut berada tepat sebelum noun (kata benda) dalam frasa noun—menerangkan noun yang mengikutinya. Kemudian, kata ini juga dapat menjadi subjek kalimat.

The Use of Demontratives

Demonstrative dibedakan menjadi 2 yaitu singular demontrastive dan plural demonstrative. Singular demonstrative, disebut juga kata tunjuk tunggal merupakan kata tunjuk yang berfungsi untuk menunjukkan atau menjelaskan sebuah benda yang jelas dimaksud oleh penutur. Singular demonstrative yaitu this (ini) dan that (itu). Singular demonstrative ini harus diikuti dengan singular noun sesudahnya.

Sedangkan, plural demonstrative, disebut juga kata tunjuk jamak merupakan kata tunjuk yang berfungsi untuk menunjukkan atau menjelaskan beberapa benda (lebih dari satu) yang dimaksud oleh penutur. Plural demonstrative yaitu these (ini) dan those (itu). Plural demonstrative ini harus diikuti dengan plural noun sesudahnya.

Baik singular ataupun plural demonstrative harus sesuai dengan jumlah benda (noun) yang mereka modifikasi. Perhatikan beberapa contoh penggunaan demonstrative dalam sebuah kalimat berikut ini.

John does not like this kind of class.

What do you think of these kinds of chairs?

 

Error Examples

Perhatikan beberapa contoh penggunaan demonstratives yang salah pada kalimat berikut ini dan pembenarannya!

That kinds of women are likely to succeed in business.	Those kinds of women are likely to succeed in business.
Jane never buys these brand of canned goods.	Jane never buys this brand of canned goods.

 

Catatan:

Sesudah singular demonstrative diikuti dengan singular noun, seperti this type, atau this brand. Sedangkan, sesudah plural demonstrative diikuti dengan plural noun, seperti those kinds.
