Hi, sobat!

Pada bagian sebelumnya membahas terkait bermacam permasalahan terkait adjective dan adverb. Pada pembahasan kali ini berkaitan dengan beberapa permasalahan yang berhubungan dengan adjective: 1) adjective yang berakhiran -ly, 2) predicate adjective, dan 3) adjective yang berakhiran -ed dan -ing.

Adjective (kata sifat) tertentu muncul hanya dalam predicate sebuah kalimat; yaitu mereka muncul setelah linking verb (kata kerja penghubung), seperti be, dan mereka tidak dapat muncul secara langsung di depan noun (kata benda) yang mereka deskripsikan.

 

The snake on the rock was alive.

The alive* snake was lying on the rock.

 

Pada contoh ke-1, predicate adjective “alive” digunakan dengan benar setelah linking verb “was” untuk mendeskripsikan subjek “snake”. Sedangkan, contoh ke-2 predicate adjective “alive” digunakan dengan salah di depan noun “snake”. Dalam posisi ini, adjective “live” seharusnya yang digunakan.

Berikut ini daftar predicate adjective dan bentuk yang sesuai ketika digunakan di depan noun (kata benda)

Predicate adjective muncul setelah linking verb, seperti be. Ia tidak bisa muncul di depan noun yang dideskripsikannya.

Each of the following sentences contains a predicate adjective or its related form. Underline the predicate adjective and its related form. Then indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I).

1. The two brothers do not look at all alike. (…..)

2. My friend brought the alive lobster to my house and expected me to cook it. (…..)

3. Are you going to be lone in the house tonight? (…..)

4. The afraid child cried for his mother. (…..)

5. Everyone else was asleep by the time I arrived home. (…..)

6. We completed out two projects in a like manner. (…..)

7. All of the crash victims were alive when they were found. (…..)

8. She tried to walk quietly by the asleep dog without waking them. (…..)

9. Were you feeling afraid when you heard the noise? (…..)

10. According to the report, the president was shot by an alone gunman. (…..)

 

KEY ANSWER

1. The two brothers do not look at all alike. (C)

2. My friend brought the alive lobster to my house and expected me to cook it. (I) > kata adjective “alive” seharusnya berupa adjective “living” karena berada di depan noun “lobster”.

3. Are you going to be lone in the house tonight? (I) > kata adjective “lone” seharusnya berupa adjective “alone” karena berada setelah linking verb.

4. The afraid child cried for his mother. (I) > kata adjective “afraid” seharusnya berupa adjective “frightened” karena berada di depan noun “child”.

5. Everyone else was asleep by the time I arrived home. (C)
