“PRONOUN: RELATIVE PRONOUN“



 
Tahukah kamu apa itu pronoun? Pronoun (pronomina: bahasa Indonesia) merupakan kata yang berfungsi untuk menggantikan noun (kata benda) baik berupa orang, tempat, benda, ataupun sesuatu. Kata itu digunakan untuk mengindari pengulangan penyebuatan sebuah kata benda (noun), nama seseorang, tempat atau sesuatu hal. Pronoun berfungsi sebagai kata kanti (rujukan) noun dalam sebuah kalimat; yang berkedudukan sebagai subjek, objek, kepemilikan, dan sebagainya. Kemudian, pronoun dibedakan menjadi beberapa macam yaitu:

Sementara itu, selain yang dicantumkan pada table di atas pronoun juga meliputi kata: who, whom, which, that, whose, dan sebagainya yang digunakan sebagai kata ganti subjek, objek, atau kepemilikan pada sebuah klausa kalimat.
Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “relative pronoun”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!
 

Relative Pronoun

Who, whom, which, that, dan whose merupakan relative pronouns (kata ganti relative) yang biasanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan relative clauses (adjective clauses). Berikut ini terdapat beberapa penggunaan relative pronoun tersebut antara lain:

1.      Who dan whom digunakan untuk kata ganti orang.

Contoh:

I saw the man who is famous for inventing plastic.

Give it to the man whom you already know.

 

2.      Which digunakan untuk  nonrestrictive,  atau  nonessential clauses;  yaitu kalusa yang tidak berpengaruh terhadap makna kalimat sebenarnya. Nonessential clauses selalu didahului dan diikuti dengan tanda koma (,).  “Which” umumnya digunakan untuk kata ganti benda.

Contoh:

The 104 bus, which is always late, should arrive at 4 p.m. at the shopping center.

 

3.      That digunakan untuk restrictive, atau essential clauses. “That” dapat digunakan baik untuk kata ganti orang maupun kata ganti benda. Kamu tidak perlu menggunakan tanda koma (,) pada essential clauses.

Contoh:

Here is the man that can answer your questions.

Did you find the book that you wanted to buy?

 

4.      Whose digunakan untuk menunjukkan possession (kepemilikan). kata ini juga diikuti dengan persons (orang) atau things (bendanya).

Contoh:

This is the man whose car was towed away.

Do you know the doctor whose children I teach?
