Embedded Question TOEFL Writing Skill: Structure & Written Expression

 

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu basic pattern? Basic pattern merupakan pola dasar atau ketentuan utama dalam pembentukan sebuah kalimat. Kita ketahui bahwa kalimat merupakan sekumpulan kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan predikat yang mengutarakan suatu ide atau gagasan yang utuh.

Selain itu, kalimat sederhana terdiri dari sebuah subjek dan sebuah predikat (kata kerja). Kalimat umumnya dapat terbentuk dari “Subjek + Predikat + Objek ” dan juga seringkali kita temukan adverb (kata keterangan) baik di awal, tengah, atau akhir kalimat.

Kalimat juga dapat tersusun atas beberapa klausa yaitu main clause (induk klausa) dan anak klausa (subordinate clause). Klausa-klausa ini tidak dapat berdiri sendiri: melainkan, klausa tersebut saling melengkapi satu sama lainnya. Salah satu dari klausa tersebut dapat memberikan keterangan berupa sebab-akibat, waktu, dan sebagainya.

 

Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “embedded question”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

 

EMBEDDED QUESTIONS

Embedded question, atau pertanyaan sisipan, merupakan sebuah pernyataan yang diawali dengan question word, seperti what, where, who, why, when, how, which, dan sebagainya. embedded question ini berfungsi sebagai noun clause yang mana dapat berkedudukan sebagai subjek atau objek pada kalimat. Berikut ini hal-hal yang perlu diperhatikan terkait embedded question antara lain:

1.      Pola pada embedded question dalam sebuah pernyataan adalah 1) “Question Word + Subject + Verb” atau 2) “Question Word/Subject + Verb”. Pada pola ke-2 ini question word berfungsi juga sebagai subjek klausa. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

• I cannot see what the sign says.
• She does not know where she should go.
• They did not know who bought the car.

2.      Pola pada sebuah embedded question yang ada pada sebuah pertanyaan sama dengan embedded question yang ada pada pernyataan. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini! (See rule 1)

• Do you know who he is?
• Did he say who called?

 

3.      Jangan gunakan auxiliary verb seperti do, does, atau did (untuk pola kalimat tanya) pada pola embedded question tersebut.

 

Error Examples

Berikut ini terdapat beberapa kesalahan dalam embedded question pada kalimat; serta, pembenarannya!

Do you know where is John?	Do you know where John is?
I was surprised when he told me how much does he study every day.	I was surprised when he told me how much he studies every day.
