    Order of Adverb TOEFL Writing Skill: Structure & Written Expression


     
    Tahukah kamu apa itu basic pattern? Basic pattern merupakan pola dasar atau ketentuan utama dalam pembentukan sebuah kalimat. Kita ketahui bahwa kalimat merupakan sekumpulan kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan predikat yang mengutarakan suatu ide atau gagasan yang utuh.
    Selain itu, kalimat sederhana terdiri dari sebuah subjek dan sebuah predikat (kata kerja). Kalimat umumnya dapat terbentuk dari “Subjek + Predikat + Objek ” dan juga seringkali kita temukan adverb (kata keterangan) baik di awal, tengah, atau akhir kalimat.
     
     
    Kalimat juga dapat tersusun atas beberapa klausa yaitu main clause (induk klausa) dan anak klausa (subordinate clause). Klausa-klausa ini tidak dapat berdiri sendiri: melainkan, klausa tersebut saling melengkapi satu sama lainnya. Salah satu dari klausa tersebut dapat memberikan keterangan berupa sebab-akibat, waktu, dan sebagainya.
     
    Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “order of adverb”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!
     

    ORDER OF ADVERBS

    Berikut ini beberapa ketentuan penempatan adverb (kata keterangan) pada sebuah kalimat yang perlu kita ketahui.

    1.      Secara umum, tempatkan adverbs (atau adverbial phrases) setelah verb (kata kerja) atau setelah object. (Jangan pisahkan subject dengan verb atau verb dari object.) perhatikan dua pola kalimat berikut ini!

    Subject + Verb + Adverb

    • He works here.

     

    Subject + Verb + Object + Adverb/Adverbial Phrase:

    • He wants to eat soon.
    • We see them from time to time.

     

    2.      Beberapa adverb (kata keterangan) dapat berada sebelum single-word verb (kata kerja yang terdiri dari satu kata) atau main verb (kata kerja utama). Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

    • He promptly left the room.
    • He was quickly escorted from the room.

     

    3.      Single-word adverbs of frequency (kata kerterangan frekuensi yang terdiri dari satu kata) biasanya berada setelah verb (to be) dan sebelum single-word verb (kata kerja yang terdiri dari satu kata) atau main verb (kata kerja utama). (Note: adverbs of frequency yang umum digunakan yaitu often, rarely, sometimes, frequently, occasionally, ever, never, seldom, usually, dan always.) Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

    • He is never on time.
    • I often see her.
    • I had frequently noticed her.

     

    4.      “Still” berada sebelum single-word verb (kata kerja yang terdiri dari satu kata) atau main verb (kata kerja utama) pada affirmative sentences (kalimat afirmatif/positif) dan sebelum auxiliary veb (kata kerja bantu) pada negative sentences (kalimat negative). Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

    • He is still waiting for you.
    • He still has not answered my questions.


    5.      Secara umum, ketentuan adverb yaitu adverb of place (kata keterangan tempat) diikuti adverb of time (kata keterangan waktu). Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

    • He went to Europe last summer.
    • I saw him at the library last night.

    They have not still finished.

    They still have not finished.

    He sent his daughter in the summer to college.

    He sent his daughter to college in the summer.
