Indirect Object TOEFL Writing Skill: Structure & Written Expression

 

Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu basic pattern? Basic pattern merupakan pola dasar atau ketentuan utama dalam pembentukan sebuah kalimat. Kita ketahui bahwa kalimat merupakan sekumpulan kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan predikat yang mengutarakan suatu ide atau gagasan yang utuh.

Selain itu, kalimat sederhana terdiri dari sebuah subjek dan sebuah predikat (kata kerja). Kalimat umumnya dapat terbentuk dari “Subjek + Predikat + Objek ” dan juga seringkali kita temukan adverb (kata keterangan) baik di awal, tengah, atau akhir kalimat.

Kalimat juga dapat tersusun atas beberapa klausa yaitu main clause (induk klausa) dan anak klausa (subordinate clause). Klausa-klausa ini tidak dapat berdiri sendiri: melainkan, klausa tersebut saling melengkapi satu sama lainnya. Salah satu dari klausa tersebut dapat memberikan keterangan berupa sebab-akibat, waktu, dan sebagainya.

 

Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “indirect object”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

 

INDIRECT OBJECTS

Beberapa verb (kata kerja) dapat diikuti oleh dua objek sekaligus, yaitu indirect object (objek tidak langsung) dan direct object (objek langsung). Berikut ini beberapa pola yang digunakan ketika terdapat dua objek setelah verb (kata kerja) pada sebuah kalimat.

1.      Beberapa verb (kata kerja) dapat menggunakan dua pola sekaligus dengan “TO”. Kata kerja tersebut antara lain seperti give: bring, send, offer, pass, take, tell, read, write, teach, dan sell. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

• My father often gives me a gift.
• My father often gives a gift to me.

 

*me : Indirect Object

*gift : Direct Object

 

2.      Beberapa verb (kata kerja) dapat menggunakan dua pola sekaligus dengan “FOR”. Kata kerja tersebut antara lain seperti buy: fix, make, dan get. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

• John usually buys Mary a gift.
• John usually buys a gift for Mary.

 

*Mary : Indirect Object

*a gift : Direct Object

 

3.      Beberapa verb (kata kerja) dapat menggunakan sebuah pola dengan “TO”. Kata kerja tersebut antara lain seperti explain: announce, describe, deliver, mention, say, report, dan return. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

• He explained his idea to us.

 

*us : Indirect Object

*his idea : Direct Object

 

4.      Beberapa verb (kata kerja) dapat menggunakan sebuah pola berikut. Kata kerja tersebut antara lain seperti ask: cost dan charge. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini!

• I asked Mary a question.

*Mary : Indirect Object

*question : Direct Object

Error Examples

Berikut ini terdapat beberapa kesalahan dalam penggunaan indirect object pada kalimat; serta, pembenarannya!

Susan’s friend sent to her a beautiful silk dress from China.	Susan’s friend sent her a beautiful silk dress from China. OR Susan’s friend sent a beautiful silk dress to her from China.
John fixed the broken lamp to Harold.	John fixed the broken lamp for Harold.
The professor explained me the difficult point of grammar.	The professor explained the difficult point of grammar to me.
The new suit cost over forty dollars to me.	The new suit cost me over forty dollars.
The store charged over fifteen dollars to me to alter the jacket I bought.	The store charged me over fifteen dollars to alter the jacket I bought.
