    Hi, sobat!

    Tahukah kamu apa itu conjunction? Yap, conjunction atau bisa juga disebut connector atau dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut konjungsi atau kata hubung. Conjunction merupakan bagian dari part of speech yang berfungsi untuk menghubungkan kata, frasa (phrase), klausa (clause), atau paragraf (paragraph). Conjunction dapat dibedakan menjadi dua yaitu single word conjunction yaitu kata hubung yang hanya terdiri dari satu kata, seperti and, for, so, but, yet, because, dan sebagainya; serta, phrasal atau correlative conjunction yaitu kata hubung yang terdiri dari beberapa kata yang saling berpasangan, seperti neither … nor, either … or, not only … but also, both … and, whether … or, dan sebagainya.

    Selain itu, conjunction menghubungkan thoughts (pemikiran), actions (tindakan), and ideas (ide), sebagimana nouns (kata benda), clauses (klausa), and other parts of speech (part of speech lainnya). Kata ini juga digunakan untuk mendaftar sesuatu hal, menyatakan kalimat yang bertentangan satu dengan yang lainnya, menyatakan hubungan sebab akibat, menghubungkan kalimat bersyarat, dan sebagainya.

    Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “Correlative Conjunction”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

     

    CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTION

    Correlative conjunction merupakan kata hubung yang ditandai dengan kata-kata yang berpasangan satu sama lain menghubungkan kata, frasa, klausa, atau kalimat. Berikut ini beberapa contoh correlative conjunction. (Ingat bahwa correlative conjunction selalu digunakan secara berpasangan)

    either . . . or

    Baik … ataupun (+)

    neither . . . nor

    Baik … ataupun (-)

    not only . . . but also

    Tidak hanya … tetapi juga

    whether . . . or

    Apakah … atau

     

    Perhatikan contoh penggunaan correlative conjunction pada beberapa kalimat berikut ini!

    • That music is both disturbing and loud.
    • Either he is going to get a job here or he is going to study in Los Angeles.
    • He is neither well qualified nor sufficiently experienced for that position.
    • He refused to say whether he would come to the meeting in person or send a representative.
    • That horse is not only the youngest one in the race but also the only one to win two years in a row.

    *Catatan:

    a. Jangan gunakan correlative conjunction “both . . . and” untuk tiga atau lebih nouns or adjectives. Perhatkan beberapa contoh berikut ini!

    Both Mary, Blair, and Margie are going to arrive late. (WRONG)

    • Mary, Blair, and Margie are going to arrive late.
    • Mary and Blair, as well as Margie, are going to arrive late.
    • Both Mary and Margie are going to arrive late.

     

    b. Whether kadang-kadang dapat digunakan tanpa “or”. Contoh: I do not know whether she received the package.

    Berikut ini terdapat beberapa kesalahan penggunaan “correlative conjunction” pada kalimat; serta, pembenarannya!
