Pernahkah kalian merasa bingung untuk
menggunakan vocabulary yang tepat ketika belajar berbicara atau menulis dalam
bahasa Inggris? Dalam bahasa Inggris terdapat beberapa aturan penggunaan
beberapa kata dalam membentuk sebuah frasa atau kalimat. Hal ini dikarenakan
kata-kata tersebut memiliki makna yang sama; namun, memiliki fungsi dan
penggunaan yang berbeda dalam sebuah kalimat. Sementara itu, kita juga dapat
menemukan beberapa kata memiliki bentuk dan bunyi yang sama, tetapi kata-kata
tersebut memiliki makna yang berbeda. Hal ini seringkali disebut dengan
“Minimal Pairs”.
Pengguanaan sebuah kata dalam kalimat tidak
hanya mempertimbangkan arti kata itu sendiri, tertapi juga perlu memperhatikan
gramatika dan konteks kalimat sehingga nantinya kalimat tersebut tidak menjadi
rancu dan ambigu. Oleh karena, itu penting bagi kita, tetutama pelajar EFL,
mempelajari beberapa fungsi dan penggunaan kata-kata berikut dalam kalimat baik
secara tertulis atau lisan sehingga nantinya dapat menyusun kalimat yang padu
dan benar dalam bahasa Inggris.
Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan
membahas “Words Often Confused Part 3”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!
WORDS OFTEN CONFUSED PART 3
Berikut ini terdapat beberapa kata yang
seringkali salah digunakan (membingungkan) dalam sebuah kalimat:
1. Respectfully/Respectively
Respectfully berarti dengan
hormat “with respect.” Contoh: The audience rose respectfully when the president entered.
Respectively berarti berurutan
“in the order given.” Contoh: The Thompsons lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, and
New York respectively.
2. So/So That
So merupakan conjunction
yang menghubungkan clause of result dengan main clause. Contoh: It rained a lot
that year, so
there were lots of wildflowers to enjoy. (result)
So that menggabungkan
clause of purpose dengan main clause. Contoh: We wore raincoats so that we
would not get our clothes wet. (purpose)

3. Stationary/Stationery
Stationary berarti pada posisi
yang tepat “in a fixed position.” Contoh: The only time most children are stationary is
when they are asleep.
Stationery merujuk pada
persediaan/ perlengkapan tulis. Contoh: That stationery store sells fancy writing paper and envelopes.
4. Their/There/They’re
Their merupakan
third-person plural possessive pronoun. Contoh: They sold their home
to a couple from London.
There merupakan (1)
adverb of place atau (2) expletive yang menceritakan tentang keberadaan sesuatu.
Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
- Your package is there on the counter. (adverb of place)
- There are fifty states in
the United States. (expletive)
They’re merupakan contraction
dari “they are”. Contoh: They’re ready to see you now.

5. To/Too/Two
To merupakan (1) bagian
dari infinitive form atau (2) preposition. Perhatikan beberapa contoh berikut
ini!
- I like to walk in the rain.
- I walked to the store.
Too merupakan adverb yang
mengindikasikan kelebihan. Contoh: It is
too hot
today to study.
Two merupakan number
(2). Contoh: I have two children, John and Greg.

6. Weather/Whether
Weather merupakan noun yang
berarti kondisi cuaca “atmospheric conditions.” Contoh: It is nice weather today
for a picnic.
Whether merupakan
conjunction yang berarti jika “if.” Contoh: I do not know whether he
will come to the party.

7. Who’s/Whose
Who’s merupakan
contraction dari “who is”. Contoh: I do not know who’s coming tonight.
Whose merupakan (1) a
question word atau (2) possessive relative pronoun. Perhatikan beberapa contoh
kalimat berikut ini!
- Whose book is this?
- I met the man whose daughter is in my class.
