Ungkapan memuji, dalam bahasa Inggris dikenal dengan Expression of Compliment merupakan ungkapan yang digunakan untuk memuji seseorang secara fisik ataupun moril.
Expression of compliment disampaikan ketika kita ingin memuji atau menghargai tindakan, kepemilikan, hasil karya, kerja, bakat, kesuksesan, dan lain-lain yang ada pada diri seseorang tersebut. Dengan demikian, pada dasarnya expression of compliment merupakan wujud rasa apresiasi dan kekaguman terhadap seseorang berkenaan dengan sesuatu hal yang positif. Oleh karena itu, expression of compliment ini identic dengan penggunaan positive adjective (kata sifat positif).
Adjective, disebut juga adjektiva atau kata sifat merupakan kata yang mendeskripsikan sesuatu hal, baik dari segi kuantitas, kualitas, atau karakteristiknya. Adjective biasanya digunakan dalam nominal sentence (kalimat nominal) sebagai complement.

Definition of Expression of Complimenting (Pengertian Ungkapan Memuji)
Expression of compliment (pujian) adalah sebuah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk memberikan pujian kepada seseorang. Pujian tersebut diberikan berkaitan dengan apa yang seseorang telah dikerjakan, kepemilikan, hasil pekerjaan/ karya, keberhasilan, keterampilan, bakat, dan penampilan seseorang tersebut.
Expression of compliment atau ungkapan pujian ini merujuk pada feeling amazement (perasaaan kekaguman) terhadap sesorang atau tindakan yang dilakukannya. Rasa kagum tersebut diungkapkan sebagai bentuk showing sympathy (rasa simpati) terhadap mereka. Hal ini karena seseorang tersebut memiliki sesuatu hal yang patut untuk dibanggakan atau dihargai.
Selain itu, expression of compliment dapat dikategorikan menjadi dua yaitu physical compliment atau non-physical compliment. Physical compliment merupakan ungkapan memuji yang ditujukan kepada hal-hal yang bersifat fisik, seperti benda kepemilikan, hasil karya, keberhasilan, dan penampilan. Sedangkan, non-physical compliment merupakan ungkapan memuji yang ditujukan kepada hal-hal yang bersifat non-fisik, seperti karakter, keterampilan, atau tindakan seseorang. Dengan demikian, ungkapan memuji adalah sesuatu positive action yang perlu dibudayakan oleh setiap seseorang terhadap seseorang lainnya, terlepas dari adanya hubungan darah, kekerabatan, pertemanan, atau hubungan kerja.
Function of Expression of Complimenting (Fungsi Ungkapan Memuji)
Adapun fungsi ungkapan memuji bagi diri sendiri ataupun orang lain di antaranya yaitu sebagai berikut.
- To compliment someone (untuk memuji seseorang)
- To appreciate someone (menghargai seseorang)
- To show sympaty to someone (menunjukkan rasa simpati kepada seseorang)
- To show amazement to someone (menunjukkan rasa kekaguman kepada seseorang)
- To express proud of someone (mengungkapkan rasa bangga pada seseorang)

Catatan:
a) Adjective (kata sifat) berfungsi untuk mendeskripsikan/ mensifati noun (kata benda), baik dari segi ciri-ciri fisik, visual, ataupun emosional. Sedangkan Verb (kata kerja) merupakan kata yang menunjukkan aktivitas atau tindakan yang dilakukan oleh seseorang, terjadinya kejadian/ peristiwa, dan lain-lain.
b) Pola kalimat compliment (c), dengan verb (kata kerja) “look” merupakan stative verb yanng biasanya diikuti langsung oleh adjective (kata sifat). Selain “look”, kata kerja seperti seem, appear, sound, dan taste dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan pujian.
c) Ungkapan pujian juga dapat ditunjukkan melalui penggunaan adverb (kata keterangan) pada kalimat, seperti really (sungguh), very (sangat), remarkably (luar biasa), extremely (sangat), so (sangat), dan lain-lain. Selain itu, mengungkapkan pujian dapat ditunjukkan dari penggunaan adjective (kata sifat) yang memiliki positive or encouraging sense (perasaan positive ataupun yang bersifat mendorong), seperti great (luar biasa), well done (sukses), marvellous (luar biasa), gorgeous (hebat), remarkable (luar biasa), awesome (mengagumkan), dan lain-lain.
