“PROBLEMS WITH PASSIVE VERB”

 

       Kalimat-kalimat dengan kesalahan pada bentuk pasif, seringkali muncul pada pertanyaan written expression pada TOEFL. Oleh karena itu, kamu harus dapat mengenali bentuk yang benar dari pasif dan mampu menentukan kapan passive verb dan atau active verb diperlukan dalam sebuah kalimat.

    Perbedaan di antara active dan passive verb (kata kerja aktif dan pasif) adalah bahwa subjek pada kalimat aktif melakukan suatu tindakan, dan subjek pada kalimat pasif menerima suatu tindakan. Untuk mengubah kalimat aktif menjadi pasif, terdapat 2 perubahan yang harus dilakukan. (1) Subjek pada kalimat aktif menjadi objek dari kalimat pada kalimat pasif. (2) Verb (kata kerja) pada kalimat pasif dibentuk dengan meletakkan helping verb (kata bantu) “be” dan kemudian menambahkan bentuk past participle verb (Verb-3); be + past participle (Verb-3).

 

(a) Margaret (subjek) wrote the letter (objek). [active sentence]

(b) The letter (objek) was written by Margaret (subjek). [passive sentence]

 

Contoh ke-1 merupakan kalimat aktif. Untuk mengubah kalimat aktif ini menjadi kalimat pasif, pertama-tama kamu harus menjadikan subjek pada kalimat aktif, Margaret, ke objek kalimat pasif dengan “by”. Objek pada kalimat aktif, letter, menjadi subjek dari kalimat pasif. Berikutnya, passive verb (kata kerja pasif) dibentuk. Karena wrote merupakan past tense pada kalimat aktif, be (was) pada past tense digunakan pada kalimat pasif. Kemudian verb wrote pada kalimat aktif diubah menjadi bentuk past participle written pada kalimat pasif.

    Perlu diperhatikan bahwa dalam kalimat pasif, by + object tidak perlu disertakan untuk membentuk kalimat utuh. Berikut ini merupakan dua contoh kalimat yang benar.

(a) The letter was written yesterday by Margaret.

(b) The letter was written yesterday.

 

Perhatikan bahwa kalimat-kalimat pasif tersebut benar jika by Margaret disertakan (pada contoh ke-1) ataupun jika by Margaret dihilangkan (pada contoh ke-2).

    Bentuk kalimat pasif yang salah seringkali muncul pada tes TOEFL. Berikut ini beberapa contoh kesalahan kalimat pasif yang mungkin muncul pada tes TOEFL.

 

(a) The portrait was painting* by a famous artist.

(b) The project will finished* by Tim.

    Pada contoh kalimat ke-1, bentuk kalimat pasif salah karena present participle “painting” seharusnya digantikan dengan bentuk past participle yaitu “painted”. Sedangkan, pada contoh kalimat ke-2, verb “be” seharusnya disertakan, dan beberapa bentuk verb be diperlukan pada passive verb (kata kerja pasif). Verb pada contoh kalimat ke-2 seharusnya “will be finished”.

The Form Of The Passive

Be + Past Pasticiple (Verb-3) + *By Object

Catatan: Kalimat passive ditandai dengan penggunaan verb passive yaitu be + past participle (verb-3) dan diikuti dengan “by” yang berarti oleh atau dengan. Be dapat beragam menyesuaikan dengan jenis tense yang digunakan, seperti present (is, am, are), past (was, were), modal (be), perfect (been), dan continuous (being).

 

Exercise 37

Each of the following sentences has a passive meaning. Underline twice the verb that should be passive. Then, indicate if the sentences are Correct (C) or Incorrect (I).

1.    The boy had never be stung by a bee. (.....)

2.    The suits were hung in the closet when they were returned from the cleaners. (.....)

3.    Money is lending by the credit union to those who want to buy homes. (.....)

4.    The record had been chose by the dancers near the jukebox. (.....)

5.    The topic for your research papers should have been approved by your advisor. (.....)

6.    That song has been playing over and over again by Steve. (.....)

7.    Their utility bills have been increased again and again. (.....)

8.    The patients who are too sick to sit up are being assisted by the orderlies. (.....)

9.    The offices were thoroughly clean last evening by the night crew. (.....)

10. The car that was struck in in the intersection yesterday is being repaired today. (.....)

 

Key Answer

1.    The boy had never be stung by a bee. (I) -> be seharusnya been untuk membentuk perfect passive. 

2.    The suits were hung in the closet when they were returned from the cleaners. (C)

3.    Money is lending by the credit union to those who want to buy homes. (I) -> lending seharusnya berupa past participle (Verb-3) yaitu lent.

4.    The record had been chose by the dancers near the jukebox. (I) -> chose seharusnya berupa past participle (Verb-3) yaitu chosen.

5.    The topic for your research papers should have been approved by your advisor. (C)

6.    That song has been playing over and over again by Steve. (I) -> playing seharusnya berupa past participle (Verb-3) yaitu played.
