“PRONOUN: WHO OR WHOM“
Hi, sobat!
Tahukah kamu apa itu pronoun? Pronoun
(pronomina: bahasa Indonesia) merupakan kata yang berfungsi untuk menggantikan
noun (kata benda) baik berupa orang, tempat, benda, ataupun sesuatu. Kata itu
digunakan untuk mengindari pengulangan penyebuatan sebuah kata benda (noun),
nama seseorang, tempat atau sesuatu hal. Pronoun berfungsi sebagai kata kanti
(rujukan) noun dalam sebuah kalimat; yang berkedudukan sebagai subjek, objek,
kepemilikan, dan sebagainya. Kemudian, pronoun dibedakan menjadi beberapa macam
yaitu:

Sementara itu, selain yang dicantumkan pada
table di atas pronoun juga meliputi kata: who, whom, which, that, whose, dan
sebagainya yang digunakan sebagai kata ganti subjek, objek, atau kepemilikan
pada sebuah klausa kalimat.
Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan
membahas “relative pronoun”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!
Who or Whom
Who dan whom, berarti “yang”, merupakan
pronoun (kata ganti) yang seringkali digunakan pada adjective clause. Who dan
whoever merupakan subject pronoun yaitu kata ganti yang digunakan sebagai
subjek klausa atau kalimat yang merujuk pada orang. Sedangkan, whom dan
whomever merupakan object pronoun yaitu kata ganti yang digunakan sebagai objek
klausa atau kalimat yang merujuk pada orang. Berikut ini ada beberapa hal yang
perlu diperhatikan mengenai penggunaan who dan whom antara lain:
1.
Secara umum, pola
penggunaan who dan whoever yaitu:
a. Who
(Whoever) + Verb
Contoh:
The
woman who sang yesterday has studied voice for years.
Who came to the
party?
Give the
money to whoever needs it.
I said
that whoever had finished could leave.
b. Whom
(Whomever) + Subject + Verb
Contoh:
The
woman whom I met yesterday is a voice teacher.
Give it to whomever
you like.

Kadang-kadang
ungkapan-ungkapan seperti berikut memisahkan who (whoever) atau whom (whomever)
dari verb atau subject dan verb main clause (klausa utama):
“I think”
“she said”
“we know”
“do you know”
Contoh:
He is a
student who we believe can do the job.
Give the
job to the person who you think is best suited for it.
He is a
man whom I feel you can trust.
Tell the
story to whoever you think should hear it.
