Hi, sobat!

Tahukah kamu apa itu basic pattern? Basic pattern merupakan pola dasar atau ketentuan utama dalam pembentukan sebuah kalimat. Kita ketahui bahwa kalimat merupakan sekumpulan kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan predikat yang mengutarakan suatu ide atau gagasan yang utuh.

Selain itu, kalimat sederhana terdiri dari sebuah subjek dan sebuah predikat (kata kerja). Kalimat umumnya dapat terbentuk dari “Subjek + Predikat + Objek ” dan juga seringkali kita temukan adverb (kata keterangan) baik di awal, tengah, atau akhir kalimat.

Kalimat juga dapat tersusun atas beberapa klausa yaitu main clause (induk klausa) dan anak klausa (subordinate clause). Klausa-klausa ini tidak dapat berdiri sendiri: melainkan, klausa tersebut saling melengkapi satu sama lainnya. Salah satu dari klausa tersebut dapat memberikan keterangan berupa sebab-akibat, waktu, dan sebagainya.

 

Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “embedded question”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!

 

CLAUSES

Clause dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut “Klausa”. Clause merupakan sekumpulan atau sekelompok kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan predikat atau kata kerja (Subject + Verb). Selain itu, clause terbagi atas dua jenis, yaitu independent clause (klausa yang mampu berdiri sendiri; memiki makna atau dapat menyampaikan suatu ide atau pikiran secara yang utuh), dan dependent clause (klausa yang tidak bisa berdiri sendiri; tidak dapat menyampaikan ide atau pikiran secara utuh).

 

Independent Clauses

Independent Clause atau disebut juga dengan Main Clause (Bahasa Indonesia: Induk Klausa) merupakan klausa yang dapat berdiri sendiri dan mampu menyampaikan suatu ide atau gagasan secara utuh. Berikut ini beberapa hal yang harus diperhatikan dalam independent clause di antaranya yaitu:

1.      Setiap kalimat setidaknya harus memiliki satu independent clause. Independent clause tersebut sekurang-kurangnya terdiri dari satu subjek dan satu finite verb (predikat) dan merupakan sebuah gagasan yang utuh. Perhatikan beberapa contoh independent clauses berikut ini!

• The president spoke.
• Betty made some iced tea.
• He is a doctor.
• They arrived at 2:00.
• I was there.

 

2.      Dua independent clauses dapat digabungkan dengan coordinating conjunction yaitu FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So). Perhatikan beberapa contoh independent clauses berikut ini!

He went to the bank, but it was closed.

She had never been to Los Angeles before, and she was quite surprised at the rush-hour traffic jams.

Dependent Clauses

Dependent Clause atau disebut juga dengan Subordinate Clause (Bahasa Indonesia: Anak Klausa) merupakan klausa yang tidak dapat berdiri sendiri dan harus disandingkan dengan Independent Clause agar mampu menyampaikan suatu ide atau gagasan secara utuh.

Dependent Clause seringkali disebut dengan Subordinate Clause karena klausa ini seringkali diawali dengan subordinative Conjunction, seperti when, if, because, before, after, dan sebagainya. Berikut ini beberapa hal yang harus diperhatikan dalam Dependent clause di antaranya yaitu:

 

3.      Sebuah kalimat dapat memiliki satu atau lebih dependent clauses, masing-masing klausa tersebut pasti memiliki subject dan finite verb. Dependent clause harus bersaandingan dengan independent clause karena klausa ini tidak mampu menyampaikan gagasan utuh dengan sendirinya. Terdapat tiga macam dependent clauses yaitu: noun clause, relative (adjective) clause, dan adverb clause.

 

Noun clause berfungsi sebagai sebuah subject atau object pada kalimat. Setiap noun clause, yang memiliki subject dan verb sendiri, dapat berupa pernyataan yang tersemat (embedded statement) atau pertayaan yang tersemat (embedded question).

Embedded statements seringkali diawali dengan “that”. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

• That he was a criminal surprised me.
• I know (that) he is from Canada.

 

Embedded questions seringkali diawali dengan question word, seperti who, when, where, why, which, what, how, dan lain-lain. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

• I do not know what time the party begins.
• He talked about what he had learned in his class.

Relative clause atau disebut juga dengan adjective clause berfungsi sebagai adjective yaitu menerangkan (pro)noun (kata ganti atau kata benda) yang berada sebelumnya. Setiap relative clause, yang memiliki subject dan verb sendiri, diawali dengan salah satu kata berikut ini yaitu who, whom, which, that, dan whose. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

• I do not know the lady who lives next door.
• He is a man (whom)* I respect.
• That is a fern plant, which never blooms.
• This is the book (that)* I borrowed from John.
• That is the couple whose house burned down.

*Note: Whom and that, ketika digunakans sebagai object, bersifat optional (boleh disertakan atau tidak).

Adverb clause berfungsi sebagai adverb yaitu memberikan keterangan terhadap kalimat baik berkenaan dengan waktu, sebab akibat, syarat, dan sebagainya. Setiap adverb clause memiliki subject dan verb sendiri. Berikut ini beberapa kata yang biasanya digunakan untuk mengenalkan adverb  clauses di antaranya yaitu: before, after, because, since, while, when,  if,  dan  although.  Introductory adverb clauses yaitu klausa adverbial yang berada di awal kalimat, maka diikuti dengan tanda koma (,). Sementara itu, jika adverb clause berada di belakang (setelah main clause) maka tidak perlu diberikan tanda koma di awal adverb clause tersebut. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini!

• Before she left, I told her.
• When it began to rain, we left.
• If I have time, I will help you.
• Although he tried hard, he did not win the race.
• We talked to her after she had surgery.
• He did not go in because he was late.
• I have not seen him since he arrived.
• They met him when they were at college.

*Note:

• Pastikan bahwa setiap dependent clause disandingkan dengan  independent clause.
• Ingat bahwa semua clauses, baik independent atau dependent, memiliki subject and finite verb sendiri.
• Finite verb merupakan kata yang dapat digabungkan dan menunjukkan tense, yaitu verb dapat berakhiran (memperoleh suffix) -ed, -s, -ing, dan sebagainya. Sebuah gerund (Verb-ing) atau infinitive (to Verb) bukanlah finite verb.
• Pada penjelasan grammar di atas, terdapat beberapa kata yang berada dalam tanda kurung; hal ini menunjuukan bahwa kata tersebut bersifat  optional (pilihan untuk disertakan atau tidak) pada kalimat.
• Ingat bahwa jika terdapat dua independent clauses, maka clause tersebut digabungkan coordinate conjunctions (and, but, etc.). Mereka tidak bisa hanya digabungkan dengan tanda koma (,).

 

Error Examples

Berikut ini terdapat beberapa kesalahan dalam clauses pada kalimat; serta, pembenarannya!
