    Hi, sobat!
    Tahukah kamu apa itu substandard? Ya, substandard merupakan penggunaan stuktur kata, frasa, atau kalimat yang baku dan dapat diterima dalam tulisan bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, substandard dipengaruhi oleh penggunaan kata-kata yang tidak baku atau slank yang lazim digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari; namun, secara kaidah bahasa tertulis salah.
    Sementara itu, beberapa kata dalam bahasa Inggris juga seringkali memiliki penulisan yang salah; dengan kata lain, tidak memenuhi standar bahasa yang diakui secara tertulis.
     
     
    Pada kesempatan kali ini, kita akan membahas “Substandard”. Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini!
     
     

    SUBSTANDARD

    Beberapa kata atau frasa berikut ini tidak dapat diterima sebagai standar tertulis bahasa Inggris di antaranya yaitu:

    1. Ain’t seharusnya tidak digunakan sebagai bentuk negative dari “be”. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!

    • John is not here.
    • I am not ready.
    • They are not coming.
     
    2. Anywheres, nowheres, everywheres, dan somewheres merupakan bentuk kata yang salah; kata-kata tersebut yang benar adalah anywhere, nowhere, everywhere, dan somewhere. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • I cannot find him anywhere.
    • Mary put her purse somewhere.
     
    3. Alright merupakan bentuk kata yang salah; kata tersebut yang benar adalah all right. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • Do you feel all right?
     
    4. Kind of a dan sort of a merupakan frasa yang salah; frasa yang benar adalah kind of dan sort of. Dengan kata lain, article “a” tidak diperlukan dan salah pada struktur frasa tersebut. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • That is a kind of plant that grows in Africa.
    • John is the sort of man who worries about other people.

    5. Mad seharusnya tidak digunakan untuk menyatakan makna kata “angry” ketika kata tersebut diikuti oleh preposition “with.” Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • The teacher was very angry with John.
     
     
    6. Off of merupakan bentuk kata yang salah; kata tersebut seharusnya off. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • The couple stepped off the bus.
     
    7. Suspicion merupakan sebuah noun (kata benda) dan tidak bisa digunakan sebagai sebuah verb (kata kerja). Bentuk verb yang benar adalah suspect. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • Mary suspects that her assistant may be stealing from her.
     
    8. The reason is because merupakan bentuk frasa yang salah; frasa tersebut seharusnya the reason is that. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • The reason that John cannot attend the meeting is that he is sick.
     
    9. Is where dan is when merupakan cara yang salah untuk memaknai arti sebuah kata. “To imitate” berarti “to act the same way as someone else.” Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • A “cookout” is “an outdoor party where food is generally cooked over charcoals.”
     
    10. Different than merupakan bentuk frasa yang salah; frasa tersebut seharusnya different from. Perhatikan beberapa contoh kalimat berikut ini!
    • John is different from his father.

    The reason that Mary is so upset is because she lost her wallet.

    The reason that Mary is so upset is that she lost her wallet.

    To “hyperventilate” is when one “breathes too fast or too deeply.”

    To “hyperventilate” is to “breathe too fast or too deeply.”

    California is different than Arizona.

    California is different from Arizona.
